Council's US-Indonesia Business Committee Announces Business Mission to Indonesia

(Washington, November 11, 1999) - Chairman of the US-Indonesia Business Committee, Vice President and General Counsel, General Electric Company, Michael Gadbaw, in a meeting today with new Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid, announced that he and Council President Ernest Bower would lead a major 25 member U.S. Business Mission to Indonesia, January 18-20.

"Our upcoming mission to Indonesia will underscore the solid commitment of the U.S. private sector to Indonesia and our confidence in Indonesia's potential for economic growth," said Gadbaw. "The committee has consistently engaged Indonesia through regular missions and ongoing dialogue with Indonesian business and government officials. We look forward to working with President Wahid, Vice President Megawati and their new cabinet."

This will be the third mission in three years that the Committee has conducted. The first in May of 1998 and the second in February of 1999 included senior representatives of a total of 30 Fortune 500 American companies.

President of the US-ASEAN Business Council Ernest Z. Bower said, "Over the last month, I have been virtually besieged by senior business executives encouraging the Committee to take another business mission to Indonesia. It will be a major business event - no doubt."

As in previous years, the Committee's Business Mission will include meetings with the Indonesian political leadership, a broad range of government ministers, and legislators. In addition to introducing American business executives to the new government, the US-Indonesia Business Committee plans to hold its 4th Indonesia-US Private Sector Roundtable. The roundtable is an opportunity for the American and Indonesian private sectors to exchange views and develop action plans that address their common interests.

The US-Indonesia Business Committee meeting with President Wahid was organized in full partnership with the US-Indonesia Society and American Indonesian Chamber of Commerce.
