U.S.-ASEAN BUSINESS COUNCIL ADVANCES U.S. COMMITMENT TO SINGAPORE

(Singapore, October 12, 1999) -- Re-affirming the commitment of the U.S. business community to the Republic of Singapore, senior executives from 22 major U.S. companies met with Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, Ministers Lim Hng Kiang, Teo Chee Hean, George Yeo and senior officials from the Economic Development Board and the National Science and Technology Board October 11 and 12 as part of the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council’s Trade Mission in Singapore. The mission was led by Ernest Z. Bower, President of the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council, and by Doug Miller, Vice President, Asia Pacific Operations, The Boeing Company. Mission members confirmed their support for the government’s recent economic reforms and complimented the strong leadership that has been demonstrated by the Singapore government during the regional economic crisis. Topics discussed between representatives of the Singapore government and members of the Council include establishing a free trade agreement for the region, strengthening bilateral U.S.-Singapore ties, and promoting more frequent high level government-to-government visits.

"The commitment of the U.S. private sector to Singapore is evident in the size and level of representation of the American business community in Singapore," said Council President Bower. "We undertook this mission because we want to build on the good relationship that exists between our two countries."

Companies participating in the mission included DaimlerChrysler, CH2M Hill,
Coca-Cola Company, Enron, Motorola, Babcock & Wilcox, Unisys, Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding, Caterpillar, Worldwide Associates, Lockheed Martin Global, Federal Express, Lucent Technologies, Boeing, Credit Suisse First Boston, United Technologies, Oracle, InterGen, Bank Boston, Computer Sciences Corporation, 3M, Eli Lilly, and the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council.
