To address U.S. business & economic leaders

Media briefing followed by dinner keynote address, November 20, 2001, Washington, DC

WHAT: H.E. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, President of the Republic of the Philippines will address a 4:30 P.M. business press briefing at the Willard Hotel in Washington, DC on Tuesday, November 20. Senior members of the President's cabinet will also be in attendance, including the Philippine Secretaries of Trade, Finance, Energy, and Agriculture. The press availability will precede a US-ASEAN Business Council Dialogue with the President, her cabinet, and Philippine private sector leaders, focused on areas in which the U.S. and the Philippines can work together to boost trade and investment, enhance productivity, and support renewed economic growth. At this event, several major U.S. companies are planning to announce new business agreements in the Philippines.

Following the press conference, a reception and dinner will be held at the Willard, at which President Arroyo will deliver the keynote address on priority issues in the US-Philippine relationship, including the role of the private sector in enhancing economic growth.

  • 4:30 - 5:30 P.M. Press event with President Arroyo, cabinet members, and U.S. and Philippine business leaders
  • 6:00 P.M. Reception begins
  • 7:00 P.M. Dinner (keynote speech will begin at approximately 8:10; the President will be welcomed by U.S. Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) and Alan J. Fohrer, President & CEO, Edison Mission Energy)

WHO: H.E. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, President of the Philippines accompanied by senior members of her cabinet: Trade Secretary Manuel Roxas; Finance Secretary Jose Camacho; Energy Secretary Vincent Perez; Central Bank Governor Raphael Buenaventura; Agriculture Secretary Leonardo Q. Montemayor; and senior members of the Philippine House and Senate. U.S. and Philippine CEOs and senior executives will also be in attendance.

The November 20 roundtable and dinner are being organized by the US-ASEAN Business Council, and are being hosted by a number of leading Council member companies, including: American International Group, American President Lines, Bank of America, Citigroup, Edison Mission Energy, ExxonMobil, Federal Express, Ford Motor Company, Halliburton KBR, Intel, Lockheed Martin, Marsman-Drysdale, McDonald's, Mirant, Monsanto, Philip Morris, Sun Microsystems, New York Life, Unocal, and United Parcel Service.
