US-Indonesia Business Committee Announces Opening of Jakarta Office
Washington, DC. The US-ASEAN Business Council's
US-Indonesia Business Committee today announced the opening of a Jakarta office to help
better serve its US Fortune 500 corporate membership. The new office has been given the full backing of Indonesian Ambassador
Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti. In a January 10 letter of support, the Ambassador says,
"As Indonesia seeks to bolster its economic recovery, the Committee's significant
investment of time, energy, and resources is a strong sign of US private sector
confidence." He goes on to characterize the Committee as a "network of
Indonesia's leading US trading partners and investors unparalleled among trade
associations for its breadth of representation and depth of engagement."
"The opportunities for business in Indonesia are immense. They require a full-time
on-the-ground presence," said Committee Director Walter Lohman. "An office in
Jakarta will help us provide member companies timely information on the changing business
environment. It will also enable us to coordinate more closely with our friends in the
Indonesian government and private sector."
The Committee has undertaken several large business missions to Indonesia and engaged in
an intensive public and private sector policy dialogue. Chairman of the Committee, General
Electric Company Vice President and Senior Counsel Michael Gadbaw, commented, "Member
companies have a real need for timely information and the ability to work with the
Indonesian Government and the private sector in Jakarta. We are very excited to have
coverage and scope for action literally 24x7 and on a global basis."
"The message we are sending by opening the US ASEAN Business Council office in
Jakarta at this time is crystal clear: We are believers in Indonesia, said President
of the US-ASEAN Business Council Ernest Z. Bower. We are committed to working in
Indonesia. We, US companies, consider ourselves to be an important part of the formula for
the return of a strong economy in Indonesia. This is the signal our members wanted us to
send to our colleagues, partners, and employees in the country."
The Representative of the Committee staffing the office in Jakarta is David Hutagalung,
MBA. David is a graduate of The George Washington University and Universitas Indonesia.
Prior to returning to Jakarta and opening the new office, David worked for the US-ASEAN
