American Businesses Discuss Trade, Investment, and Economic Recovery with Thai PM Surayud

(New York) Thailand’s Prime Minister H.E. Surayud Chulanont met today with American business leaders at a roundtable that was followed by a reception. The event was organized by the US-ASEAN Business Council, and is hosted by Council’s Chairman Martin Sullivan, President and CEO of American International Group, Inc (AIG).

“US-Thai relationship will reach the 175th year milestone next year and the historically strong diplomatic, security and economic relationship will continue to grow. We want American businesses to know that Thailand is open for business,” said Prime Minister Surayud.

The Council has met three times with Prime Minister Surayud in Bangkok over the past year. Council members discussed their business interests and problems and appreciate the willingness of PM Surayud and his team to meet and hear the concerns.

“We are encouraged that the political process is moving with an election scheduled for late this year. We are committed to working with the Thai government in the joint effort to promote trade and re-energize the investment climate. We will not just point out troubles but will be proactive in offering realistic suggestions and recommendations, and that is why the companies are here today,” said Matthew Daley, President of the Council.

One of the participants of the roundtable, Chair of the US-Thailand Business Committee of the Council, George Kirkland, Executive Vice President, Upstream of Chevron, added "As a leading foreign investor and oil and gas producer in the Kingdom of Thailand, Chevron is committed to developing the Kingdom's energy resources to assist with providing a reliable supply of energy for the future. With demand for transportation fuels and natural gas expected to continue to rise in Thailand and the region, Chevron continues to believe Thailand is an attractive place for investment and growth."
