The US-Malaysia Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Business Coalition is a coalition
of organizations and companies strongly committed to promoting the negotiation,
passage, and implementation of a commercially meaningful and comprehensive
bilateral FTA between the United States and Malaysia. Made up of over
50 American business organizations and individual companies from a broad
range of industries, the Coalition is the premier voice representing US
business interests in the US-Malaysia FTA process.
Background
U.S. Trade Representative Robert Portman and Minister of International
Trade and Industry, Dato' Seri Rafidah Aziz announced the start of negotiations
on a US-Malaysia FTA on March 8, 2006 at a ceremony in the United States
Congress in Washington D.C. The US business community formally launched
the US-Malaysia FTA Business Coalition later that day at a luncheon event.
The role of the Coalition is to support the development a high standard
FTA agreement, and to ensure US business' interests are well represented.
It will work to ensure that both negotiating parties stay focused on completing
the agreement in good time, and then on passage of the agreement through
required government processes. The Coalition is also a leading source
of educational information about the importance of the US-Malaysia relationship,
and the economic benefits of an FTA agreement for American industrial,
service and agriculture sectors.
Structure of the Coalition
Companies interested in playing an active role in ensuring their industry
priorities are addressed in the negotiation of the US-Malaysia FTA are
encouraged to join the Coalition.
The US-Malaysia FTA Business Coalition is made up of four key components:
Coalition membership, Steering Committee, Corporate Co-Chairs, and the
Secretariat.
American companies interested in receiving regular updates, meeting invitations,
and recognition as supporting the US-Malaysia FTA are encouraged to join
the general Coalition membership (signup for below). Currently consisting
of over 50 companies and organizations, the general membership is made
up of some of America's leading American companies and business associations.
US companies interested in playing a more active role in the Coalition's
efforts to support the negotiating process are encouraged to join the
Steering Committee. The Steering Committee is currently made up of approximately
15 associations and individual companies representing a broad range of
key industry sectors. The associations include the: American Chamber of
Commerce-Malaysia, Coalition of Service Industries, Emergency Committee
for American Trade, National Association of Manufacturers and the United
States Chamber of Commerce.
Steering Committee members will enjoy the benefits of regular membership,
while also being offered the opportunity to support events and initiatives
related to promoting advancements on the FTA process through event sponsorship
and participation in leadership meetings.
For more information on how to join the Steering Committee, please contact
mmealy@usasean.org or call 202-416-6707.
