Ismeth Abdullah is the first directly elected governor of Riau Islands Province, one of the most economically competitive regions of Indonesia. Elected in 2005, Governor Abdullah will serve a five-year term during which he aims to extend the province’s leadership in international trade and investment and the development of the Batam Free Trade Zone. Governor Abdullah previously served as the Chairman of the Batam Industrial Development Authority, at which he guided fresh Foreign Direct Investment into the region. Today, nearly 800 foreign companies have investments in Batam totaling more than US$11 billion. The Riau Islands Province includes Bintan, Batam, Karimun, Lingga and Natuna Regency. He will replace Mr. Kurt van Der Walde following consultations this Spring.
