March 27Washington, DCBriefing with Ms. Barbara Weisel, Assistant USTR for SE Asia & Pacific The results of Malaysia’s recent national elections have been defined as “shocking”. The ruling coalition government went from a 90% majority in Parliament down to a simple majority and opposition parties took control over 5 of Malaysia 13 state governments. Many analysts described the vote as a clear demand for change in the ruling coalition government’s approach to economic and social policies. Since the election, PM Abdullah has announced his new cabinet and it included replacing both Rafidah Aziz the Minister of International Trade and Industry and Apdal Shafie the Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs. In this context, we think it would be valuable to get an updated view on how the US State Department and the United States Trade Representatives Office views these developments in relationship to America’s current and future bilateral economic relationship with Malaysia.Marc Mealy
