Bright Minds Read
Philippines
Bright Minds Read is a partnership of McDonald's and Department
of Education - NCR that seeks to address the alarming statistic
that 40% grade 1 students in public schools in Metro Manila are
still non-readers in March.
Bright Minds Read sets the country's first beginning reading program.
It promotes reading and literacy to educate the mind, build character
and cultivate social values. It uses literature - based approach
to education advocated by University of the Philippines education
experts and storybooks developed by Adarna House.
In school year 2003 -2004, Bright Minds Read is being implemented
in five Grade 1 sections each in fourteen schools, affecting 70
grade 1 teachers and 4,200 numbers of children. The research component
is expected to assess the merits of the program for wider implementation
in school year 2004-2005.
